Industrial Water Filtration System for a New Bakery Production Site

Tapflo UK designed and supplied a turnkey industrial water filtration system for MFL Mechanical, built as a filtration skid for a new bakery production factory in Slough. The bespoke skid system filters incoming water through duty/standby pre-filters and three cryptosporidium-rated stages down to 1 micron, with no pump required.

The Challenge

MFL Mechanical was delivering a project at a new bakery production factory in Slough and needed a filtration skid to treat the site’s incoming water supply; they reached out to Tapflo UK for bespoke water filtration.

The client required a bespoke turnkey skid system, designed by Tapflo, delivered ready to connect and built around cryptosporidium-rated filters. Water arrives at the site at 4 to 4.5 bar, so the skid didn’t require a pump, only filtration, pipework, and valves. The pre-filters had to be duty/standby, so one could be taken out of service for cleaning while the other kept the supply running.

The duty:

  • Inlet pressure: 4 to 4.5 bar
  • Flow rate: 3 L/sec
  • 2 x 100 micron pre-filters in duty/standby
  • 3 x cryptosporidium filters in series at 20, 10 and 1 micron
  • Lugged butterfly isolation valves and pressure gauges
  • PN16 flanged connections
  • 316 stainless steel flange

The Solution

The Tapflo UK design and engineering team specified the filtration with the site’s long-term maintenance in mind:

  • The 100-micron pre-filters use cleanable stainless steel mesh, so operators clean the elements rather than replace them.
  • The finer stages use bag-style filters, needing one element per housing instead of five pleated cartridges.
  • The port orientation on the housings allows tidier pipework and a better valve layout, with easier access for maintenance.
  • Flanged housings avoid threaded joints sealed with compound, which removes potential bug traps and leak paths as sealant degrades.

Tapflo designed and supplied the skid as part of its process engineering and design work.

The Results

The bespoke skid, built on Tapflo UK’s site is built to filter the bakery’s incoming water to 1 micron through cryptosporidium-rated stages without interrupting supply for pre-filter cleaning. With cleanable mesh pre-filters and a single bag per housing in the finer stages, fewer parts need changing at each maintenance visit.

What is a water filtration skid?

A water filtration skid is a pre-assembled frame carrying filter housings, pipework, valves and gauges, delivered ready to connect. The skid Tapflo UK supplied for a new bakery in Slough filters 3 L/sec of incoming water through 100 micron pre-filters and three stages down to 1 micron.

Does a filtration skid need a pump?

Not always. If the supply already arrives at enough pressure, the skid can run without one. The Tapflo UK filtration skid for MFL Mechanical’s bakery project runs from an inlet pressure of 4 to 4.5 bar, so no pump was needed.

Why use duty/standby pre-filters?

Duty/standby means two pre-filters are fitted in parallel, with one in service and one ready. On the Tapflo UK bakery filtration skid, this lets the operator isolate and clean one 100 micron stainless steel mesh pre-filter while the other keeps the water supply running.

Bag filters or pleated cartridges?

For the bakery filtration skid, Tapflo UK recommended bag-style filters for the finer stages, as each housing takes one bag rather than five pleated cartridges. Fewer elements per housing means fewer parts to change during maintenance.
