Ball Valve
- Can be used for Isolation & Regulation
- When positive shut-off is required
- Where a compact design is required
- Quick opening – 90º rotation between open to fully closed
- Handle positioning is a quick indication as to whether the valve is open or not
- Full bore designs do not restrict the flow
Butterfly Valve
- When positive shut-off is required
- Mainly used for Isolation however can also be used for Regulation
- Quick opening – 90º rotation between open to fully closed
- Lightweight & Easy to install – fit between flanges in pipework
- Less costly than Cast Iron Bodied Gate Valve equivalents
- Can be used for slurries and where there are solids in suspension
- Restrict flow even when fully opened – the disc is sat in the fluid path.
Gate Valve
- Only used for Isolation
- Minimal Pressure Drop
- Minimal Fluid Entrapment
- Used for intermittent and occasional operation
- Slow to open and close due to rising stem/gate
Check Valve
- Used for controlling the direction of flow and preventing backflow
- Swing Check Valves are used where minimal pressure drop is required & recommended for use with Gate Valves
- Can only work in certain mounting configurations as they rely on gravity to re-seat
- Spring Check Valves are used with reciprocating pumps and can be used in all mounting positions
Globe Valve
- For Regulation of Flow & frequent operation, short stems reduce operating time
- Introduce appreciable pressure drop
- Fairly bulky & heavy
