Our ATEX Pumps in Action: Case Study

A paint manufacturer needed an ATEX, self-priming mobile skid to transfer solvent and paints from mixing vessels to filling lines.

Tapflo UK engineers successfully designed and installed a robust, mobile paint filtration skid system tailored to the end user’s operational requirements. The system delivered safe and reliable performance while complying with relevant industry standards and site requirements. The unit was certified to Ex II 2G IIB T4, ensuring suitability for hazardous-area applications.

Tapflo UK supplied them with components, some of which included:

  • ATEX Rated Barrier Diaphragm Pumps with Active Pulsation Dampeners
  • ATEX-Rated Pneumatic Drive with Pressure Gauges and Valves

What does ATEX mean?

ATEX refers to EU product directives that state the minimum requirements for protection from explosive atmospheres and environments.

ATEX certification means that a pump is safe to use with hazardous products and in explosive environments.

What are ATEX Hazardous Zones 0, 1 and 2?

ATEX Zone 0: There is a presence of flammable materials during normal operation for extended periods.

ATEX Zone 1: Areas where an explosive atmosphere may be present (a mixture of air and flammable substances), requiring specific safety measures and ATEX equipment.

ATEX Zone 2: An explosive atmosphere may not normally occur during normal operation, but could occur occasionally/for a limited time.

How do I know if a pump is ATEX rated?

If a pump is ATEX-classified or rated, the product description will state that they are. Also look out for the black and yellow Ex logo, which symbolises ATEX certification.

Where are ATEX pumps required?

If you are handling hazardous or flammable products or operating in a potentially explosive environment, you will need a pump that has an ATEX classification.

What are the advantages of ATEX-rated pumps?

ATEX Pumps come with many benefits, some of which include:

  • Robust materials: ATEX pumps are manufactured with robust materials such as carbon-filled polypropylene, cast iron and stainless steel AISI 316.
  • Safety: ATEX-rated pumps are designed to operate safely in explosive atmospheres.
  • Compliant: These pumps are subject to stringent testing to meet strict safety regulations, ensuring high-quality materials are used in the pumps.
  • Versatility: ATEX variant pumps are available in many different pump types and are used in various industries.
