A client who is part of the School of Medicines team at a large UK University, approached us in need of a pump solution capable of moving 3,000l of chemicals from a tank to an IBC located 3m away.
Application Details
This customer approached Tapflo UK from a School of Medicine at a UK University, searching for a pump solution that would transfer 3000l of chemicals from a tank to IBCs that were located approximately 2/3m away.
Their requirements for the Chemical Transfer Pump included:
- Ideally, the pump would be supplemented with a long hose for complete emptying of the tank,
- Easily operable, ready to use and with limited setup.
- Tank emptied within an hour
- Preferably ATEX-rated so the pump and components can withstand chemicals
The chemical mixture in the tank was a combination of hot water, Boric Acid, Ammonium Nitrate, Potassium Nitrate, Sodium Sulphite, Glycol, Stock II and Formalin (37%).
Chemical Transfer Pump Solution
Tapflo UK took the clients’ requirements for the application needs and supplied a Self-Priming Flexible Impeller Pump to the customer.

The specific model chosen was the: EP MIDEX ¼”, close-coupled design, manufactured from AISI 316 and EPDM for chemical resistance.
Within our quote, it was mentioned to the customer that we could also provide a handle on the pump and/or a trolley for manoeuvrability around the site, and so the Flexible Impeller Pump was supplied mounted on a Stainless Steel (AISI 316) trolley and suitable hoses and connections were provided for their applicational needs.
Customer Support
The customer requested installation on-site by a Tapflo engineer, but for this solution, we felt this was unnecessary and would cost the customer more than the task was worth. Instead, we offered to change the O-Rings and seals to those that would be more chemically resistant in our factory before sending the solution to the customer, as this would be the most difficult part to set up, so the client would have one less thing to set up themselves.
We pride ourselves in supporting our customers in a range of ways, and in this instance, it would have been largely misleading to suggest and charge them for a site visit when it wasn’t needed. In our after-sales support, the customer told our Sales team how they were pleasantly surprised at how easy the pump was to put together.
Features & Benefits
This solution was delivered to the customer for several reasons:
- Within budget: EP Flexible Impeller Pumps are a cost-effective solution
- Transportable: Mobile solution as fitted to a trolley
- Safe: The pump’s materials were compatible with the chemicals being transferred
- User-friendly: The pump has a simple installation
- Reliable: The pump has low maintenance costs as it is made of high-quality materials and parts
