AOD Operating PrincipleOperating principles

Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps are principally made up of 2 Liquid Chambers, 2 Air Chambers and 2 Diaphragms. The Liquid and Air Chambers are separated by a Flexible Diaphragm.

Compressed Air is supplied to the air valve which distributes the air from the Centre Block, where 2 ports direct the flow of air to the right and left side Air Chambers.

The same air pressure from the air supply is directly applied to the back side of one of the Diaphragms, forcing it forward and therefore the medium out of the Fluid Chamber, lifting the Ball Check Valve and out of the Discharge Port (2), with equal pressure to that which is supplied.

The Diaphragms are connected by a shaft which is screwed into the centre of each. As one of them is forced forward the other is pulled towards the Centre Block, causing a vacuum effect on the suction side. The medium is subsequently drawn through the Suction Port (1) and into Fluid Chamber.

The Air Valve automatically transfers the air pressure to the opposing side at the end of each stroke, reversing the action. Hence the term 1:1 reciprocating pump.

The Ball Check Valves alternately Open & Close in unison with the reciprocating action of the diaphragms. Enabling filling of the Fluid Chambers and preventing back flow through the pump. A variety of Balls can be supplied to provide both chemical resistance and different weights to suit the viscosity of the medium.

Changes in Capacity due to Suction Lift & Viscosity

Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps capacity will vary according to changes in both viscosity and suction lift, below are charts displaying the % drops in flow according to the changes in both. These variations need to be taken into account when selecting a suitable pump.

 Energy Saving Drive

Energy Saving DriveThe air valve is the heart of any Air Operated Diaphragm Pump. It distributes the compressed air to the air chambers behind the diaphragms.

The air valve in a Tapflo Air Operated Diaphragm Pump is placed in the middle of the pump, between the diaphragms, to achieve the shortest air paths possible and a minimum of so-called “dead volumes”. This all together is the key to a reliable and energy-saving drive.

The Tapflo air valve has no deadlock position – the pump will always start automatically when the air is supplied to the pump.

The valve body is made from brass or optional PET or stainless steel AISI 316.

It is made for maintenance free duty with non-lubricated air, thanks to the ingenious sealing system. It will not only save you money on lubrication, it will also protect the environment from pollution.

Ball Check / Flap Valves

Ball Check and Flap ValvesThe Tapflo Air Operated Diaphragm Pump pump is fitted with four check valves as standard, making sure that the liquid is transferred in the right direction through the pump and that the pump remains primed.

The ball type valve is the most simple and reliable valve design. It has a good sealing capability and is easy to keep clean and to replace if necessary.

The ball valve materials are available in EPDM, NBR (nitrile), PTFE, AISI 316, polyurethane and ceramic to suit any kind of liquid.

Aseptic EHEDG Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps

With the avocation of Tapflo’s ingenious Magnetic Ball Lifters on our Sanitary and Aseptic EHEDG Pumps, users are able to drain the contents of the pump for CIP & SIP procedures without the need for disassembly or rotating the pump in its stand.  What could be easier!

The Valve Ball is made from either Stainless Steel AISI 420 or PTFE with a Steel Core to ensure that they can be lifted by the Ball Lifters and are suitable with a wide array of fluids.

Flap Valves Sanitary AODD

Flap valves are used on our Sanitary & EHEDG Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps when pumping liquids containing big solids without damage is required. We are able to pump solids up to 50 mm in both the T225 and T425 pump sizes and an impressive 100 mm in the T825 4” pump. When fitted with flap valves, our pumps can reach dry suction lift of 4.5 meters. Tapflo flap valves are durable, have only two spare parts and are hygienic thus easier to clean.

    PE Pumps
    Tapflo have standardised to Solid Block Polyethylene (PE HD) instead of moulded PP (Polypropylene), which is commonly used amongst other Air Operated Diaphragm Pump manufacturers on the market. There are couple of reasons for this: PE has a superior wear resistance (6 to 7 times better) to PP. This fact makes the pump perfectly suitable for handling abrasive slurries and preferred to Stainless Steel in these applications. Tapflo also uses different grades of PE depending on the part to ensure the best mechanical and abrasion resistance. For instance, valve seats and ball stoppers, which are the most vulnerable parts to wear, Tapflo use UHMW PE1000 which has even greater resistance to abrasion and mechanical stress. PE is also resistant to most kinds of aggressive chemicals such as concentrated acids and alkalis. Making it an ideal material for chemical handling as well. PP is instead used as material for the centre blocks, again machined from solid block instead of moulded.
     PTFE Pumps
    Tapflo offers virgin solid block PTFE as an alternative to PE as it offers superior chemical and temperature resistance. PTFE will handle even the most aggressive of acids, such as concentrated Nitric Acid and handles temperatures up to 100ºC instead of 70ºC for PE. [/tm_tab] [tm_tab title="APPLICATIONS"]

    Aluminium & Cast Iron Pumps
    Metal Air Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps are ideally suited for the transfer of pH-neutral fluids, both thin, thick, solid laden or abrasive. The aluminum and cast iron pumps are found in most fields; workshop and paint industries, purifying plants etc., to mention only a few. They are also widely used for the transfer and batching of hydrocarbons such as diesel and varying oils such as lube oils, hydraulic oils & gear oils.
    Stainless Steel AISI 316 Pumps
    Cast via the “lost wax” method, ensuring greater accuracy and finish quality, the stainless steel pumps combine great mechanical strength with good chemical resistance. Stainless Steel AISI 316 is resistant to aggressive liquids like nitric acid and sodium hydroxide. The centre unit, which is not in contact with liquid, is made from corrosive resistant polypropylene (PP) as standard (other materials are available upon request such as carbon impregnated PP, Aluminium & Stainless Steel AISI 316). Easy Draining Sanitary After the CIP procedure, the pump usually has to be drained from the CIP fluid. Disconnect the pump from the pipework Loosen the two socket head cap screws on the stand & rotate the pump 180° to let the remaining fluid drain off. The airline may be left connected during this operation. Rotate the pump back into position and refit the socket head cap screws and reconnect the pipework.     DAMPENERS OPERATING PRINCIPLE The air pressure supplied to the dampener is the same as the one supplied to the pump. When the pressure in the piping system decreases, due to the pulsating nature of the pump operation, the pulsation dampener supplies extra pressure to the discharge between the pump strokes, therefore supplying a steady flow of pumped medium.
